What is "good" art? Is it realistic? Is it detailed and accurately drawn? Does it have pretty colours? What if we want to express an unhappy feeling through visual arts? For example, an artist might paint a picture of unhappy people and choose elements of design that reflect this feeling. Therefore, this painting might not be realistically drawn or have pretty colours. Would this artwork be "good"?

In this art project students in grades 3 and 4 learned to express a variety of feelings by selecting appropriate elements of design. For example, bright or light colours often express positive feelings. And, rough, jagged lines and shapes often express negative feelings. Students learned that decisions about self-expression through visual arts are individual and varied. Students used the same thought process to understand and comment on artwork created by others. This, indeed, is "critical thinking"; an important part of the Ontario Visual Arts Curriculum.

Take a close look at the colourful artwork created by the grade 3 and 4 students. Each square was created by a different young artist. Each square represents a feeling. Can you find a square that expresses a happy feeling? Unhappy? Excited? Lonely? Inspired?
