| In March, 2004, students in
grade 7 at Burnt Elm Public School worked together to create a colourful
mural for their school. The theme for the mural was carefully chosen to
align with the grade 7 curriculum. Students in grade 7 learned to create tessellations as part of the mathematics program. As part of the mural making project, each student created their own tessellation. Note how the positive and negative space is equal in each of these student tessellations, shown below. Inspired by the famous artist, M.C. Escher, a mural design with many repeating lizard shapes was created. |

| Students also learned about principles of design as they worked together. They learned that the principle of rhythm is the repetition of like shapes and that rhythm can be used to move the viewer’s eye through a work of art, thus employing the principle of movement. |
