At Thomas Street Middle School in April 2005, students worked together to create a large colourful mural.

The abstract design of the mural was inspired by famous modern artist, Piet Mondrian, especially noted for his masterful use of principles of design including the principles of rhythm and movement.

In our design, rhythmic lines and shapes work together to create the illusion of movement within a pack of running wolves. More than 70 students participated in the painting of the mural adding their own artistic flare to each shape within the design. All students at Thomas Street Middle School participated in curriculum aligned visual arts activities that complemented the mural project.

Wolves are the subject matter of this mural and also the mascot of Thomas Street Middle School. The rhythmic lines and shapes of the abstract design focus on how the pack of wolves runs together in unison. The elements combine and overlap making it difficult to determine where one wolf starts and another finishes. Therefore, this mural design speaks to us of the united efforts of teamwork found in the many facets of participation at Thomas Street Middle School.
