In this well-known story, a boy named Jack lives with his mother in a small cottage. They are very poor and decide to sell their cow so that they will have money to buy food. But along the road as Jack is taking the cow to the market, Jack meets a stranger who buys the cow for five magic beans. When Jack returns home his mother scolds him for being foolish and trusting the stranger. |

Not believing that the beans are magic, Jacks mother throws them out the window and they both go to bed hungry. By the next morning a giant beanstalk has grown. It is so tall that it reaches the sky. Jack climbs the beanstalk to find a nasty giant who lives in a castle in the clouds. The giant is surrounded with fantastic wealth including a magic harp and a goose that lays golden eggs. |

As Jack makes off with the goose the giant shouts after him, "Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an English-mun!" The chase is on! Jack scrambles back down the beanstalk with the giant in close pursuit. But Jack is clever and chops down the beanstalk saving themselves from the nasty giant. The story concludes with Jack and his mother living happily ever after with the wealth of the goose that lays the golden eggs. |
