In a mural painting project in October, 2006, students in grade 5 and 6 learned about self-expression through visual arts. Each student designed and painted their own “magic bean”, tying in with the “Jack and the Beanstalk” theme painted earlier on adjacent walls. See also the "Jack and the Beanstalk" mural.

Students created whimsical beans by choosing elements of design including a variety of lines, shapes and colours to create non-representational artwork such as patterns and designs. Students learned that elements of design can be used to express thoughts and feelings. A bright colour pallet was carefully chosen to create a joyful, positive feeling for the school.

Self-Expression through Visual Arts

Bright colours and smooth, curved shapes and lines are often used to express positives feelings.

Dark, dull colours and jagged shapes and lines are often used to express negative feelings.
