Library mural (above) and concept drawing (below)

A mural was created for the library at King's Masting Public School. The forest theme included a Silver Birch tree and a Blue Spruce tree representing popular reading programs provided at the school. A White Pine tree was also included because of its historical significance for the area. White Pine trees were used in the building of masts for a royal fleet, thus the name "King's Masting" was adopted by this public school.

Students participated in this mural project by creating colourful leaves for the trees. The leaves were glued to prepared panels and given generous layers of varnish. The panels were then added to the mural walls. In this curriculum aligned visual arts activity students learned about elements of design (lines, shapes, colours, etc.) and created non-representational artwork (designs and patterns).

We were in need of some "expert scribblers" to add texture to the leaf panels. We just happen to find a whole bunch of expert scribblers in the kindergarten rooms. They worked hard, with great concentration and enthusiasm, and added wild scribbly lines to the plain green panels before the leaves were added. Every student in the school participated in an art activity.

We had fun!
