This mural was designed to highlight local environmental concerns, specifically urban sprawl. A landscape was created with both urban and rural areas. A powerful digger is shown to be consuming the rural land. As the landscape changes from rural to urban the colours also change from fresh, harmonious greens to less pleasing, more subdued colours.

This mural project aligned with the Ontario Visual Arts Curriculum and was a collaborative effort between students and the artist where the students each designed and painted one space within the landscape and the artist completed the mural. Half of the participants painted a rural space and the other half of the students painted an urban space. Students that painted urban spaces used specific colour palettes and, using 3 colours, created patterns that looked like roads and buildings. Students that painted rural spaces used specific colour palettes and, using 3 colours, created patterns that looked like different kinds of crops. The artist painted all remaining elements in the mural.

This mural was designed to set students up for creative success and then to showcase their achievements. Students are able to identify their own artwork within the group project and recognize their contributions to the overall success of the mural. Students worked with the artist in small groups according to a schedule and received one-on-one instruction and demonstration.

Students prepared for this project by creating designs and patterns on a worksheet. Information was provided on the worksheet which summarized student expectations for participation.

Colour charts and information about the process of the project was displayed for all to see throughout the duration of the project.
