A colourful mural was created as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations at Terry Fox Public School. In this curriculum aligned visual arts activity, a special Terry Fox forest was created. Children of all grade levels were invited to create leaves for the trees. But these were no ordinary leaves. Students used elements of design, including colours, lines and shapes, to create non-representational designs and patterns within their leaf shape. |

Students used oil pastels on paper. The paper leaves were then carefully cut out and laminated to prepared panels. Staff and parents soon joined the fun. Hundreds of whimsical leaves were soon filled with whirling swirls, bright polka-dots, wild textures, stripes of every size and variety conceivable and much more. With no two leaves alike, together they created a joyful symphony like a choir of unique voices all singing one song together. This mural has been designed to set students up for creative success and then to showcase their achievements. With the help of a catalogue that documents the students' artwork, children are able to identify their own artwork within the group project and recognize their contributions to the overall success of the mural. |
