An ordinary stairwell was transformed into a natural wonderland with giant milkweeds and colourful insects. The subject matter of this mural integrates with the science curriculum by including cycles and the co-existence of some plants and insects. The monarch butterfly is shown at various stages of its life cycle, showing its dependence on the milkweed plant. The milkweed is shown with flowers in spring, seed pods in summer and seeds floating on the breeze in autumn. Aphids often depend on ants for their survival. The ants tend the aphids, transporting them to their food plants at the appropriate stages of the aphids' life cycle and sheltering the aphid eggs in their nests during the winter. Ants will also protect the aphids from predatorily insects such as ladybugs. The aphids, in turn, provide honeydew for the ants. The bright colours and the over-sized scale of the mural create a joyful, child-friendly atmosphere for the school.
