This large mural was created with over 300 students in grade 1, 2 and 3. Each primary student decorated one object; butterflies in grade 1, birds in grade 2 and houses in grade 3. They worked with the artist in small groups receiving one-on-one instruction and demonstration. The students learned about elements of design (including colours, lines, shapes and textures) as they participated in this curriculum aligned visual arts activity. The students were set up for artistic success and can recognize how their own, unique creativity has contributed to the success of the mural as a whole.

The rolling hills and colours in this mural are in keeping with a theme already established in the foyer, library and computer lab.

Grade 1

Each student in grade 1 decorated one butterfly. They used bright colours with stampers and paint brushes. This project integrated with the math program and symmetry.

Grade 2

Each student in grade 2 decorated one bird. They used bright colours and paint brushes to create different kinds of lines that curved with the movement of their bird.

Grade 3

Each student in grade 3 decorated one house. They used bright colours and paint brushes to create whimsical houses with doors, windows, stripes and polka-dots. This project aligned with their studies of community.
