A joyful, child-friendly atmosphere was created in this library. The magic of childhood imagination and curiosity came to life through the use of rich colours and delightful images. In keeping with established school themes, light-rays radiate from the warm, central sun towards the edges of the mural, giving a feeling of universal spirituality. Also, eagles magically emerge from spaces within the sky and trees, reminding us of the continuity of nature and its importance in Aboriginal spirituality.

This phase of the library mural has two areas where there is powerful, swirling wind. Two further areas of wind will be included in phase two. In the end, four directional winds will be included, representing an established school theme. A Silver Birch tree, representing the popular reading program, was painted on the one pillar. Phase two will include a Blue Spruce tree for the second pillar. The Jack-pine trees give a feeling of Canadian landscape. Floating feathers and lettering complete the theme.

Progress photos

The photos, below, show this mural project at various stages. A mural project is a wonderful opportunity to share ideas about visual arts with staff. Students are able to watch the process and see how a mural is created from beginning to end. It is my goal to take the "mystery" out of visual arts and empower staff and students to enjoy and develop their own creativity.
